Biography

By painting in the open air, directly from the scene, Nigel Shipley achieves a freshness and life that cannot be obtained by painting in a studio from photographs or sketches.

Nigel Shipley studied at Harrow and Norwich Schools of Art. He won the Cube Cinema Award for his painting at the Bristol Show. His work is held in collections in the UK, France and Switzerland

His subjects are the everyday corners of Bristol and the surrounding area; the harbour, woodlands, streets of the commercial centre and railway bridges. Nigel avoids painting the city’s icons, such as the Clifton suspension bridge, but if an icon happens to sneak into the corner of a painting – so be it. He is especially interested in the kinds of things that are such a part of our daily life that we no longer notice them. His most recent work includes nudes.
